Gerolamo Cardano (24th September 1501 -21st September 1576) was an Italian Renaissance Mathematician, physician, astrologer and gambler. He wrote more than 200 works on medicine, mathematics, physics, philosophy, religion, and music. His gambling led him to formulate elementary rules in probability, making him one of the founders of the field.

Today Gerolamo Cardano is best known for his achievements in Algebra.

Find out what he has done and share your findings with your classmates.

  1. Gerolamo Cardano’s achievements:

    - First mathematician to make systematic use of numbers less than zero.

    - Introducing the binomial coefficients and the binomial theorem.

    - First Mathematician to treat probability systematically, as well as a section on effective cheating methods.

    - He invented several mechanical devices including:

    Combination lock

    Gimbal/Cardano suspension(Debatable)

Cardan Shaft with universal joints (still used in vehicles to this day)

    - His studies of hypocycloids. The generating circles of these hypocycloids were later named Cardano circles or cardanic circles.

What he did that was so impressive:
+First Mathematician to use numbers less than 0 systematically.

+He published solutions of cubic and quartic equations in a book back in 1545.

+He discovered imaginary numbers, then introduced the binomial coeffeciencts and the binomial theorem.

+He published 2 encyclopedias of natural Science containing a wide variety of inventions, facts, and occult superstitions.

+He introduced the Cardan Grille, a cryptographic tool.

Not so good things that happened to him:

-His favourite son and himself was executed in 1560.

-He was executed because of poisoning his cuckolding wife.

-His son gambled and stole money from him.

-He allegedly cropped one of his son's ears.

-Forced to give up his professorship.

    Interesting facts:
=He practiced medicine till his death at 1576, however the date of his death has been disputed and he might have lived till 1577 instead.

=He and Leonardo Da Vinci were good friends.

  6. Gerolamo Cardano is known for his achievements in algebra, being the first mathematician to find a proper use for numbers smaller than 0. He recognised the existence of what we now call imaginary or complex numbers. He had also made an in-depth study of probability as he was gambler and wanted an edge to win more. Also, he was experienced in other fields such as medicine and astrology.

  9. - In 1539, he published his first book on Mathematics titled 'Practica Arithmetice Et Mensurandi Singularis'.

    - In that book, he first presented his brilliant Mathematical skills in approaching and solving problems in Algebra.

    - In one example, he was able to solve a specific cubic equation by manipulating the terms to reduce the problem to a quadratic equation that could be solved.

  15. Girolamo Cardan or Cardano was an Italian doctor and mathematician who is famed for his work Ars Magna which was the first Latin treatise devoted solely to algebra. In it he gave the methods of solution of the cubic and quartic equations which he had learnt from Tartaglia.

  22. Cardano (1501-1576 74y.o.) was a physician, inventor, mathematician and a gambler. He is known for his work in the field of algebra and for his "discovery" of the quartic and cubic formula which was actually founded by Scipiore del Fero.He is also known for biromial coefficients and binomial theorem in his book Opus novum de proportionibus. He is also one of the first mathematician to make use of negative numbers and proposed the idea of imaginary numbers. He was also imprisoned for heresy for casting Jesus's horoscope.
